Directed by Alejandro Monteverde and based on true events, Sound of Freedom is inspired by the story of Tim Ballard, a former Department of Homeland Security official and founder of anti-child-trafficking group Operation Underground Railroad. Ballard resigned from the organization shortly before the film’s July 4 debut and has been accused of sexual misconduct, according to a Vice News report. He has denied the allegations.

The film sees Ballard (played by Jim Caviezel) on a vigilante pursuit to rescue two children from seedy human traffickers who have a web of locations around the world, and the actor himself appears in the credits with a special message urging audiences to donate to spread the word about Sound of Freedom. The film also stars Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, Javier Godino, Yessica Borroto, Eduardo Verástegui, Manny Perez and others.

Sound of Freedom’s performance at thebox officewas due in part to a grassroots campaign from Angel that made audiences feel part of a movement to help end child trafficking. Though the film was discussed on QAnon message boards, Angel and the filmmakers disputed it was a QAnon movie, or that it was even political. Ballard is an ally of former President Donald Trump, who hosted a private screening of the movie in mid-July in New Jersey.

Following the sexual misconduct allegations against Ballard published by Vice, O.U.R. released a statement to The Hollywood Reporter that noted its founder’s June 22 departure from the organization: “O.U.R. is dedicated to combating sexual abuse, and does not tolerate sexual harassment or discrimination by anyone in its organization. O.U.R. retained an independent law firm to conduct a comprehensive investigation of all relevant allegations, and O.U.R. continues to assess and improve the governance of the organization and protocols for its operations.”

Director Monteverde and co-writer Rod Barr penned a guest column for THR in August, saying, “If there’s one issue that can unite everyone, it’s ending child trafficking. We still believe that.Child trafficking is not a conservative or a liberal issue. It is a fundamental human rights issue, one that strikes at our very core as human beings.”
